Instructor of American Sign Language Interpreting
Closing date: November 16, 2015

The Department of Classical and Modern Languages is seeking a dedicated professional to teach interpreting in our American Sign Language Interpreting Studies (ASLIS) program for the 2016-17 academic year. This is a one-year term position with the possibility of renewals. Native or near-native proficiency in ASL, and an MA or Ph.D. in American Sign Language Interpreting, Deaf Education, or other appropriate field is required. Applicants must also have national interpreting certification through the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf.

Candidates should be prepared to teach our Practicum in Interpreting, ASL to English Interpreting, Professional Ethics, Settings, Processing Skills, and ASL courses, and have experience working with the Deaf community. Instruction in our program is both on and off-site. Department service will also be required, and could include administrative work.

Case Management Specialist

The case management specialist provides education, advocacy and accessible support and referral services to help Deaf and hard of hearing individuals access community services with increasing independence. This full-time (40 hours per week) position is responsible for creating and maintaining relationships with clients and other agencies towards empowering clients with tools for self-advocacy and independence, while maintaining confidentiality and appropriate boundaries. This position will also help clients understand processes and documents required to request or maintain services in the community including housing, employment, and more as well as helping agencies/businesses understand how to work with Deaf and hard of hearing individuals.

The position requires a Bachelors/Master’s degree preferred, in the field of Deafness, Deaf education, or human/social service, and experience in Deaf and/or hard of hearing fields or experience with the Deaf and/or hard of hearing communities. Applicants must be conversational in American Sign Language and English.

Jefferson County Public Schools is currently anticipating vacancies for both Sign Language Interpreters and Teachers of the Deaf for the 2015-2016 School year. You can use the keyword Interpreter to search for the Interpreter description and application. For a teaching position you can search ELEMENTARY TCHR HEARING IMPAIR. There are actually postings for Elem, Middle and High School listed. You can use any of those to apply for any Elem, MS, HS, itinerant or Pre-K positions that are available.
