The Kentucky Commission on the Deaf and Hard of Hearing

KCDHH Deaf and Hard of Hearing Resource Library has accumulated resources that will benefit anyone having connections to deaf and hard of hearing individuals, whether they are parents, educators, interpreters, physicians, family and friends, or day care providers. We have books, videotapes, periodicals and reference materials that cover a broad range of topics including, but not limited to American Sign Language, interpreting, children’s literature, cochlear implants, Deaf culture, family resources, speech reading, mental health, and speech and language.

P-12 Educational Interpreter Resources

The Kentucky Department of Education (KDE) is committed to assisting school districts that are providing interpreting services to students who are deaf or hard of hearing.  An educational interpreter consultant is on staff with our agency and available to answer questions and provide consultations to districts.  The Kentucky Educational Interpreter Guidelines document has been created to assist administrators, teachers and school staff on effectively working in partnership with interpreters to best meet the needs of the students.  For more information call (502) 564-4970, or see our P-12 Educational Interpreter web pages by clicking on the “P-12 Educational Interpreter Resources” like above.

Eastern Kentucky University Interpreter Training Program Outreach Library

This outreach library lends literature, CDs, DVDs, VHS and other sign language interpreting study materials through the mail. Media can be searched my title, publisher or topic and materials can be checked out online. This site also lists available Continuing Education workshops approved by the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf.

Kentucky School for the Deaf Special Education Cooperatives

The Kentucky School for the Deaf runs a Statewide Educational Resource Center on Deafness that consists of links to numerous resources and information. These links cover a spectrum of topics including advocacy, support, education and family services, disabilities, sign language, deaf history and hearing assistance.

KSD also administers the Sign Language Proficiency Interview (SLPI) which is an evaluation tool that assesses communication skills using sign language. If you are interested in taking the SLPI, contact Kimberly Curtis at 859-936-6783 (V), 859-439-0043 (VP), or Kimberly.curtis@ksd.kyschools.us.
