Access Center

The Access Center (AC) is an office within the Kentucky Commission on the Deaf and Hard of Hearing. Beginning January 1999, the Access Center staff began accepting requests for interpreting and captioning services for state agencies. Please view our Referral Services for detailed information on how to request services.

We are mandated to serve only state agencies. Therefore, private entities such as doctors' offices, attorneys, private businesses and non-profit entities are NOT ELIGIBLE for this service. Interpreting/captioning needs for private businesses may be obtained through other captioning or interpreter referral agencies or by contacting freelance interpreters on an individual basis. Freelance interpreters are self-employed individuals who have their own fee base and bill directly to the requesting agency. Some interpreters work with private referral agencies. In this case billing comes directly from the referral agency and may also include a coordination fee.

You can find a listing of licenced interpreters in the Interpreter Directory which is maintained by the Kentucky Board of Interpreters.

Another component of the Access Center are the Deaf Access Stations (DAS). Deaf Access Stations are videoconferencing units that allow deaf or hard of hearing individuals to access state services while communicating via sign language or through the use of captioning. These stations are located in several locations throughout the Commonwealth. Click on videoconferencing to request this service.
